There is just eight days left until teams from all over head to Barrie for CBC Play-On tournament. Our Red Devilz have confirmed today that they have enough active players to roster two teams of seven players and have paid and secured both teams in this tournament earlier today.
Play-On will release a full schedule on Thursday June 13th between 8pm and 9pm. As soon as the schedule is released we will post it on here and the team site for all fans.
Also, Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is excited to announce that the 2013 national street hockey championships will be held September 26-28, 2013 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The tenth anniversary season of the fastest growing sports festival in Canada will culminate with its largest ever national championship event. One hundred and sixty-eight teams from across Canada will be invited to Yarmouth to compete for the Redwood Cup.
Each of these teams must earn their right to attend this championship by virtue of performance at one of the twenty-one qualifier events held across the country this May and June. In all, over 6,000 teams are expected to compete for the Redwood Cup this season. Teams will pay their own travel expenses to the event.
Back Ground Of The Redwood Cup:
The Cup stands 49" (124.5cm) tall and is made of real Canadian redwood with plated sterling silver.
The five silver sticks that encompass and support the trophy represent of the number of players on a team*. The sticks also guard the silver maple leaf, symbolic of the importance of street hockey to our nation.
Heavier than the Stanley Cup, it weighs over 63 lbs (28.6 kg)! The trophy cost over $10,000 to produce.
The Cup gets its name from Redwood Road in Kingsville, Ontario - the childhood home of the founder of the Play On! program - and serves as a tribute to all hockey players in Canada whose dreams were first cultivated on the streets or driveways of their homes.
